Homewood Reeling After Devastating Storm

Homewood, Alabama – Residents of Homewood are still assessing the damage after a powerful storm swept through the city on Friday, December 8th. The storm brought down trees and power lines, caused widespread gas leaks, and damaged homes and businesses.

Multiple Downed Trees

One of the most visible signs of the storm's damage is the large number of downed trees. Trees were uprooted by the strong winds, blocking roads and causing damage to homes and vehicles. City crews are working around the clock to clear the debris, but it is expected to take several days to complete the task.

Gas Leaks

Another major concern is the numerous gas leaks that were reported after the storm. The high winds caused damage to gas lines, leading to leaks in several areas of the city. The Homewood Fire Department is responding to these leaks and working to contain them. Residents are being urged to evacuate their homes if they smell gas.

Power Outages

The storm also caused widespread power outages. As of Saturday morning, over 10,000 residents are still without power. Alabama Power is working to restore power as quickly as possible, but it is unclear when all customers will have their electricity back.

Other Damage

In addition to the downed trees, gas leaks, and power outages, the storm also caused damage to homes and businesses. Roofs were blown off, windows were shattered, and siding was ripped away. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but it is expected to be in the millions of dollars.

Response and Recovery Efforts

The City of Homewood has declared a state of emergency and is working to coordinate relief efforts. The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency is also assisting with the response.

A shelter has been opened at the Homewood Community Center for residents who have been displaced from their homes. The Red Cross is also providing food and assistance to those in need.

Community Support

The Homewood community has rallied together in the wake of the storm. Many residents are volunteering their time to help with cleanup efforts. Local businesses are also donating food, water, and other supplies.

How to Help

If you would like to help the victims of the storm, here are a few ways you can do so:

  • Donate to the Homewood Relief Fund.
  • Volunteer your time to help with cleanup efforts.
  • Donate food, water, and other supplies.
